Our History

"I don't golf, I don't play bridge. This is my hobby. I enjoy meeting people." says Jack Mosel, founder of Mosel.

Mosel was started by Jack Mosel and has been in business since 1945. It started as a small general store on St-Laurent Boulevard and quickly expanded into a larger department store, located on Bleury Street, and eventually settling into it's current award-winning location on Boulevard Jean-Talon West (Grand Prize Winner of Commerce Design de Montréal 2000).

The first store sold almost everything from razor blades, hockey sticks to electric guitars. They sold watches and a wide assortment of products catering mostly to the sailors from the port of Montréal. Not long after thry added a wholesale division and even had salesmen on the road.

In the 1960's, Jack Mosel opened a new store on Bleury Street near St-Catherine and expanded his product lines. The Bleury location now had a large jewellrey section, electronics and camera department and of course watches. This store quickly became a landmark in Montréal and everyone knew of Mosel.

In 1971, Jack left the downtown core of Montréal to relocate near the Blue Bonnets race track. There once again Mosel diversifed with a large luggage section. In 1992 Mosel's moved again to our current location at 4048 Jean-Talon West.

Today, Mosel has built it's reputation as the place to go for luxury goods with high-end products such as TAG Heuer watches, Montblanc writing instruments, Swarovski Crystal, Lladro porcelein figurines and assorted leather goods and giftware from around the world.

Today, Jack Mosel's family is a part of the business. In addition to Jack and his son Howard, Jack's wife Dorothy, his daughter Donna also work in the store.

At 90, Jack could have retired years ago, but he simply prefers to keep working. "I think it's what has kept him going", says Howard. "And he has made one concession with age. He leaves at 4:30 instead of closing.
